Gap Band V- Jammin charted at #2 on Billboard's Black Albums chart, as well as #28 on the Pop Albums chart. Notable tracks included "Party Train" and "Jam the Motha". The Gap Band was an R&B and funk group dating back to 1967. Their bulk of their fame grew throughout the 1970s and 1980s thanks to the collaboration of the Wilson brothers; Robert, Charlie, and Ronnie.
After several decades of success, the group disbanded in 2010, but their legacy lives on through many contributions in R&B music. Charlie Wilson's vocal style is regarded as the inspiration behind new jack swing artists like Keith Sweat, Jodeci, and R. Kelly. Dave Grohl of Nirvana has credited The Gap Band for inspiring that famous drum intro in "Smell Like Teen Spirit". With the rise of R&B and hip-hop in the 1990s, many of The Gap Band's songs got sampled by popular artists like Jermaine Dupri, Mary J Blige, Ashanti, Ice Cube, Da Brat, Nas, Snoop Dogg, and Jagged Edge.
