This awesome maroon t-shirt is for the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska, which takes racers all the way from Anchorage to Nome. The race is an intense test for the most elite sled dogs and mushers as teams must face blizzards which cause whiteout conditions, sub-zero temperatures, and gale-force winds. Portions of the Iditarod trail were used by Native Americans before the arrival of Russian fur traders in the 1800s, but the most famous use of the trail was the 1925 serum run to Nome. When a diphtheria epidemic struck the city of Nome, a supply of antitoxin had to be rushed from the city of anchorage using sled dogs. One of the mushers, Gunnar Kaasen and his lead dog Balto, became media celebrities and a statue of Balto was even erected in Central Park.
