This awesome vintage shirt commemorates the first ever edition of the MTV Video Music Awards. This now iconic awards show dates all the way back to September 14th, 1984 when the inaugural ceremony debuted live on the beloved channel. The show was hosted by famous actors Dan Aykroyd and Bette Milder at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Nominees included ZZ Top, Billy Idol, David Bowie, the Police, Cyndi Lauper, and Michael Jackson, among others. Jackson wound up winning the second most awards thanks to his video for the smash hit "Thriller", while bandleader and pianist Herbie Hancock took home the most, thanks to his song "Rockit". Meanwhile the coveted Video of the Year Award was presented to the Cars for their song "You Might Think".

The show was packed with several notable performances from artists like Rod Stewart, Huey Lewis and the News, Tina Turner, and Ray Parker Jr. But the most memorable performance by far was Madonna's rendition of her hit song "Like a Virgin". The moment would wind up going down in pop culture history thanks to the elaborate staging and provocative imagery, which included the iconic singer emerging from a massive wedding cake in a see-through gown and bustier with a silver belt-buckle that proudly read "BOY TOY". The pop diva wound up flashing her underwear on live television as well, thanks to a bit of improvisation caused by a small wardrobe malfunction.

Madonna's live flashing, would just be the first of many memorable television moments born from the MTV VMAs. During its hey-day, when MTV was known for its music video content, the VMAs were considered the "Super Bowl for youth". Teens and young adults would tune in to see what outrageous stunts and performances would occur, and this amazing shirt dates all the way back to the beginning.
