The first safety town was founded by a police officer in Ohio in 1937and the program was expanded in the 60s by nursery school teacher, Dorothy Chlad. She established the National Safety Town Center as a comprehensive safety program for preschoolers and kindergarteners to learn about street traffic. Safety towns are small, enclosed versions of a town where young children come to learn about staying safe around cars, buses, and bikes. There are over 3000 safety towns throughout America.
