Town and Country was founded by Craig Sugihara in the early 70s, and he opened up the first T&C surf shop in Pearl City, Hawaii. Sugihara was driven by a love of surfing to design and shape high quality surfboards. Board shaper Tak Kawahara became a co-owner of  T&C Surf and he expanded the company into apparel, surf watches, sandals, accessories, and even stationary. This was a first in the surfing industry and helped solidify T&C Surf as a staple in the surfing community.

In the 1980s, T&C Surf hired artist Steve Nazar to draw characters for the brand and so Thrilla Gorilla and Da Boys were born. Thrilla Gorilla, based off of surfer Dane Kealoha, and his gang encapsulated the aesthetic of 80s surf culture. Da Boys even made appearances in two video games: Town & Country Surf Designs: Wood & Water Rage and Town & Country Surf Designs II: Thrilla's Surfari, both for the NES. Da Boys stopped appearing on T&C merch in the late 80s but have since been revived by their creator as the Thrilla Krew.
