This cool vintage shirt pays tribute to the classic 1977 science fiction film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and it includes the tagline "We are not alone". The movie was a huge commercial and critical success, one of the many produced by director Steven Spielberg. It won the film's sound editor, Frank Warner, a Special Achievement Academy Award, and in 2007 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry, due to its cultural significance. The film's story centers around exactly what its title suggests, encounters with aliens or extraterrestrials, and the movie is largely responsible for helping to jumpstart a reemerging interest in science fiction during the 1970s.

The movie features what's become an iconic five-tone melody. In the context of the film, the melody is used by scientists to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors. Composer, John Williams, came up with hundreds of different iterations, before production finally settled on the one that was used. Williams was also responsible for the score to another highly influential science fiction film from the decade, Star Wars, for which he won an Academy Award. Since the movie premiered, that famous five tone sequence has been referenced and parodied in various media, including everything from James Bond to South Park.
