The group was founded in Oklahoma and it actually began as the National "What to Read" Club in partnership with a local library. Eventually, the organization changed their name to Beta Sigma Phi to represent the first letters of the Greek words for life, learning, and friendship. There are an estimated 20,000 active members worldwide and the organization initiated their one millionth member in 1995. In addition to social events, Beta Sigma Phi participates in community service and publishes an arts magazine called The Torch.
