Earnhardt was hoping to secure his 8th career win, which would break the record for most Winston Cup wins by a driver, and Gordon was hoping to clinch his first career win. Thanks to Gordon's consistency throughout the season, he beat Earnhardt by 34 points and became the youngest driver to win the championship in NASCAR's modern era. Gordon made light of his win and poked fun at himself at the end of season banquet by toasting Earnhardt with a glass of milk, as opposed to champagne.
