This vintage sweatshirt features a graphic of Opus the Penguin, the titular character of Berkeley Breathed's Sunday comic strip, Opus. The character of Opus was originally introduced in 1981 and was meant to be a simple one-time gag. He was re-introduced a year later and grew to become a central character in Breathed's comic strip Bloom County. Opus has also appeared in the Sunday strip Outland and several of Breathed's children's books such as A Wish for Wings and Goodnight Opus. He was given his own strip in 2003 and Opus the comic strip was syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group until 2008, when Breathed made the decision to retire the character.
