This awesome vintage shirt celebrates the 1951 science fiction classic, The Day the Earth Stood Still. The shirt showcases a graphic of the imposing, eight foot tall, alien robot, Gort and the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto". The movie has been described as one of the best films to emerge from the early 50s and in 1995 it was selected for preservation in the United States' National Film Registry. The movie was directed by Robert Wise who was also responsible for the widely celebrated musical films West Side Story and the Sound of Music, and it starred Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, and Frances Bavier.

In the movie, Gort was portrayed by the actor Lock Martin, who stood an impressive 7'7". The role required Martin to wear a thick foam rubber suit, and there were lifts in the costume's boots in order to further emphasize the robot's impressive height. The Day the Earth Stood Still is loosely based off of the 1940 short Story "Farewell to the Master", which was written by Harry Bates for the sci fi pulp magazine Astounding Science Fiction. Gort is based off the character Gnut, although in the original the robot is much more human-like and expressive.
