TMNT was originally conceived as a comic book series, that spoofed other popular comics from the early 80s, drawing inspiration from series like Uncanny X-Men, New Teen Titans, and Daredevil. In 1987, the comic's colorful characters were licensed to Playmates Toys and an animated series was developed to help promote the new action figures. The cartoon ran for ten seasons and told the story of mutant brothers Michaelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and Leonardo fighting against the dastardly Shredder and the Foot Clan.
