This amazing vintage tee was made to celebrate Richard Foreman's 1976 production of the German play The Three Penny Opera, which was staged for the New York Shakespeare Festival. This rendition of Bertolt Brecht's colorful critique of capitalist society ran for nine months at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, and it featured a new translation of the play from Ralph Manheim and John Willett.

In 1976, Richard Foreman had already established himself among the avant-garde theater scene when he chose to tackle this classic show. The production boasted an impressive cast that included Ellen Greene, best known for originating the role of Audrey in the stage adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors, and Blair Brown, who would later star in the films Altered States and Continental Divide. Meanwhile the starring role of Macheath or "Mack the Knife" was played by Raul Julia, a veteran of the New York Shakespeare Festival who later came to be known for one of his personal favorite roles, as Gomez Addams in the Addams Family films.

The 1976 production was nominated for several awards, including a Tony for Most Innovative Production of a Revival, and the back of this tee features a particularly prominent quote from the play, "Art isn't nice".

Fits like a modern unisex adult small.
