Nefertari, also known as Nefertari Merimut was the first of the Great Royal Wives of the pharaoh, Ramesses II, and Nefertari's notoriety is often ranked among such iconic Egyptian queens as Cleopatra, Nefertiti, and Hatshepsut. The queen was regarded both for her beauty and intelligence, and was able to both read and write in hieroglyphs.

Nefertari appears on several monuments at the temples in Abu Simbel. The historic site's small temple is actually dedicated to Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. After her death, Nefertari was buried in tomb QV66 at the Valley of the Queens, and her tomb is one of the largest found at the site. Several remnants from the tomb, were later put on display at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
