This double-sided ringer promotes the automotive service chain Pep Boys, and it features the caricature of the three eponymous mascots on the front and a slogan on the back that says "The three best friends your care ever had". Pep Boys can be traced all the way back to 1921 to the Pep Auto Supply company in West Philadelphia. Although there are only three Pep Boy mascots, the business was actually started by four friends who each chipped in $200 to start a company. The original founders were Emanuel "Manny" Rosenfeld, Maurice "Moe" Strauss, W. Graham "Jack" Jackson, and Moe Radavitz. The Pep name was inspired by a carton of Pep Valve Grinding compound that was in the store during their brainstorming session, and Pep Boys eventually emerged when people who recommend the shop would tell others to visit "the boys at Pep".
Before the end of the decade, Radavitz and Jackson left the business, but Strauss's brother took on the role of "Jack" Pep and the shop continued on, surviving through the Great Depression to expand onto the west coast. They opened an LA location in 1933, which featured the company's first service bay. From there the Pep Boys continued to grow until they eventually started opening supercenters in the 80s, which is when this shirt is from. By this point in time the company had grown to making over $2 billion in annual sales.
