During the 1970s the US went through what was called the "running boom," which had over 25 million Americans picking up running for recreation and fitness.

The Kiwianis Club is a charitable organization for volunteers whose motto is "Young Children, Priority One." The Kiwanis Club organized the Palos Verdes Marathon. This marathon started in the 1960s, and become known as one of the most challenging runs in the country.
