This amazing shirt was made for fans of the erotic comic series Cherry. This tee proudly boasts, "I heart Cherry" and also features a delightful cherry scent. The series was originally published by Last Gasp in 1982, however the eponymous Cherry Poptart was first introduced in the 1971 underground comic, Funnybook #1. Cherry was the creation of Larry Welz, who purposefully drew the character in a style reminiscent of Dan DeCarlo and the Archie comic books. The intention was to juxtapose the wholesome feel of the Archie comics with the more risque subject matter of Cherry.
Despite the lewd nature of the Cherry comics, the series has garnered praise for its silly and satirical story lines. Beyond that, the character of Cherry Poptart is considered a major mascot against censorship in comics and art. During the early 90s, several Canadian comic book shops were busted by the police for selling Cherry and other explicit titles. This eventually led to the formation of the Comic Legends Legal Defense Fund, for which Cherry is considered a spokesmodel. The CLLDF is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting the rights of free speech in the comics industry, and the organization has been promoted within Cherry comics.
