This rad vintage band tee is for the British group Public Image Ltd. Often referred to as simply PiL, this new wave band was created by the former lead vocalist of the Sex Pistols, John Lydon and one of the original guitarists for the Clash, Keith Levene. After departing from the Sex Pistols, Lydon sought to create a new, vastly different group and he drew inspiration from genres like dub, prog rock, and disco. Their first album, First Issue, was released in 1978, and the following year they released Metal Box, which pushed their sound in an even more avant-garde direction.
The band derived their name from the Muriel Spark novel, The Public Image and when they made their debut in fall of '78 it was with a song called "Public Image" as well. Lydon wrote the song while he was still in the Sex Pistols, about how he felt exploited by his manager, Malcolm McLaren. The single made it to the top ten of the UK charts, and PiL's music has been considered among some of the most influential post-punk era releases of all time.
