This sweet shirt promotes the film noir parody, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. This 1982 comedy starred Steve Martin, who co-wrote the movie alongside its other star, and its director, Carl Reiner. The pair decided to team up to create a film that utilized clips from old movies, and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid became a partial collage film, featuring clips from 19 different classic movies. While the actual cast consisted of actors like Reiner, Martin, Rachel Ward, George Gaynes, and Reni Santoni, there were also a number of old Hollywood stars that appeared via archival footage. This included actors such as Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, and Vincent Price.

Despite this unique format, Martin refused to watch any classic film noir movies during production, as he was worried they'd influence his performance as private investigator Rigby Reardon. The movie does however incorporate several famous film noirs, including This Gun For Hire, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and The Glass Key.
