This old school rap tee is dedicated to Run-DMC's 1988 Tougher Than Leather album. It's deadstock, completely unworn since the 1980s, and comes from the collection of a security guard who toured with the rap icons during Hip-Hop's Golden Era.
Tougher Than Leather was Run-DMC's fourth studio album, released in 1988 alongside a film of the same name that starred the group. Fan favorites from the album included tracks like "Mary, Mary" and "Run's House". Even though the album had mixed reviews at the time, it has since become hailed as an underrated and seminal classic with a Platinum certification by the RIAA, and charting positions on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip Hop Album charts.
The album was produced by Run-DMC, Davy D, and co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, Rick Rubin. Rubin had been a producer in NYC's punk scene before he entered the city's hip-hop scene through a lot of networking and persistence. Once Rubin joined forces with hip-hop promoter Russell Simmons, the label Def Jam really took root in hip-hop music.
Today Def Jam is one of the biggest labels in the industry and it has worked with some of the biggest names in rap and hip-hop, including performers like Kanye West, Nas, and 2 Chainz. Some of Def Jam's earliest breakthroughs include signing legendary hip-hop acts Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J.
