This amazing vintage tee pays tribute to the legendary horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. The character was conceived and portrayed by Cassandra Peterson, and Elvira rose to fame in the 80s as the host of the B-horror movie showcase Elvira's Movie Macabre.
After the death of Larry Vincent, who had portrayed Sinister Seymour, the host of the horror series Fright Night, Los Angeles producers were looking to create a new horror show program with a female host. Peterson won the role in a casting call and began crafting her sexy punk inspired persona. Shortly before the show's first taping they ran into a minor snag when they received a cease and desist letter from fellow horror hostess Maila Numi, who claimed the character was a rip-off of the iconic Vampira. The court ruled in favor of Peterson who claimed that aside from the black hair and dress, Elvira was nothing like Vampira. In fact, despite Elvira's gothic appearance Peterson has often compared her to a California "Valley girl".
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Elvira grew from a cult figure to a major pop culture icon. She became the inspiration for Halloween costumes, comic books, perfumes, dolls, and various other memorabilia. She then starred in her own feature film in 1988 Elvira Mistress of the Dark. A follow-up was filmed in 2000 called Elvira's Haunted Hills, although since the movie had such a small promotional budget Peterson chose to screen it at various AIDS charity fund raisers across the country.
