This incredible vintage tee promotes the 1996 science fiction action film Independence Day, and it depicts one of the most pivotal moments of the movie, when the aliens unleash their global attack and blow up the White House in Washington D.C. The shirt includes the very appropriate tagline "They do not come in peace".

Independence Day was directed by Roland Emmerich, who would also go on to direct a sequel to the film twenty years later, and the movie was packed with a star-studded cast that included Bill Pullman, Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid, Harvey Fierstein, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner. Several critics have sited Independence Day as a turning point in the history of the Hollywood blockbuster, and the film is credited with helping to jumpstart the disaster film and science fiction resurgence of the mid to late 90s. The movie made over $800 million while it was in theaters, and it paved the way for other summer blockbusters like Twister, Armageddon, and Deep Impact.

Independence Day required over 3,000 special effects shots, and the movie broke the record for most miniature model work to ever appear in a film. The menacing aliens featured in the movie were designed by
Patrick Tatopoulus, who actually created two original concepts. Emmerich liked them both so much that he chose to use one design for the actual aliens and the other for the bio-mechanical suits that are worn by the extraterrestrials. Supposedly the US military had offered to support the movie and was going to allow them to film at actual military bases, but this support was relinquished after the military got word of the references to Area 51.
