MAD magazine was founded in 1952 by Harvey Kurtzman and William Gaines. Alfred E Neuman's face had already been a popular cartoon graphic for several decades, before Kurtzman claimed it in 1954. The name Aflred E. Neuman was then bestowed upon the image by Mad's second editor, Al Feldstein
During Feldstein's reign as editor, from 1956 to 1985, he was able to increase the magazine's readership by more than two million people. The publication became a paragon of satirical humor, and it featured the art of iconic cartoonists such as Wally Wood, Don Martin, Jack Kirby, Mort Drucker, and Dave Berg.
