This vintage tee pays homage to the survivors of the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington. The large volcanic eruption was several weeks in the making, beginning with an earthquake in March of 1980. By April, geologists and eye-witnesses were reporting that the north side of the mountain was beginning to visibly bulge. On May 18th, 1980, a second earthquake hit and the entire north face of Mount St Helens collapsed, resulting in the largest known debris avalanche in history. As the volcano caved in, the pyroclastic flow raced down the mountainside ultimately covering hundreds of square miles. Ash was found on cars and roofs as far away as Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The eruption of Mount St. Helens had catastrophic effects on the surrounding communities and environs. 57 people lost their lives, thousands of animals died, and hundreds lost their homes. The volcano continued to erupt, although never to the same extent, until 2008. Surprisingly enough, the eruption was beneficial to aquatic life in the area. The high quantity of ash falling into the rivers and lakes enriched the water with minerals and aquatic ecosystems flourished.
Fits like a modern unisex adult medium. Graphic is faded, see pics.
