This funny graphic tee features a caricature of the 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon. He's posed and dressed similarly to cartoons of Mickey Mouse from around the same time which just adds to the goofiness of the shirt. The graphic says, "Nixon in 88. He's tanned, he's rested, he's ready." This tag line started appearing on t-shirts before the 1988 election. Some wore the shirts ironically because the idea of the former president, now in his mid 70s, rerunning for office was comical. Others wore the shirts more seriously, genuinely wanting to see Nixon resume the mantel of Commander in Chief.
Many comedians and late night shows parodied the idea of Nixon running again. On the Late Show with David Letterman, there was a joke that there weren't any candidates for the 1988 presidential election but Nixon was available and ready to run. In reality, George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis ran in the 1988 General Election for the republican and democrat parties respectively. Although the country never saw a third term for old Tricky Dick, Nixon '88 shirts remain popular among collectors of political gear and one of the tees is even part of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's archival collections.
