The Clash were formed in 1976 and made massive contributions to the first wave of British punk rockers. Their influence would go on to affect the new wave and post-punk movements that followed. Their line up most famously consisted of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Nicky "Topper" Headon.
The band was quick to find commercial success in the United Kingdom just after the release of their debut album in 1977. Funny enough, it would take until their third album release, London Calling, to gain traction in the United States. This album would eventually be declared the best album of the 1980s by Rolling Stone.
The early 80s ushered in international fame for The Clash, following their 1979 release of London Calling. As it tends to go, the great success also brought a great deal of problems. Their drummer, Topper Headon, was let go from the band due to a heroin addiction. This made room for more tensions between bandmates. Bassist, Paul Simonon and lead singer, Joe Strummer ended up firing their lead guitarist, Mick Jones.
Throughout the setbacks, the band prevailed for a number of years before disbanding completely in 1986. While all good things come to an end, members of The Clash did keep the music alive and with collaborations and even reunited several times before Strummer's death in 2002. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and they are best remembered for songs like "Should I Stay or Should I Go", their cover of "I Fought the Law", and their top ten hit "Rock the Casbah".
