"Scab" is a derogatory term coined for workers who didn't take part in organized labor, join a union, or participate in a strike. It can be dated as far back at 1777, but could have been used even earlier. As the 1800s rolled around, "scab" took on an even uglier meaning, referring specifically to workers who crossed picket lines to replace the jobs of striking workers or new hires brought in to keep the company running while original workers were on strike. These individuals were also known as strikebreakers, backlegs, or knobsticks.
