Some of these lyrics include "Move up, Starsky for the C.I.A. Suck on Kojak for the USA". The song was originally written by guitarist Mick Jones before he ever joined the band. With its original title "I'm So Bored with You", the song centered around his tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend at the time. As the story goes, singer Joe Strummer misheard the first time Jones presented the song to him, but before the misconception could be remedied, Strummer was already inspired to write new lyrics to the song, reinventing it as a diatribe about the failings of America.

A bootleg recording of the original version of the song, before the title change, exists and can be heard on the popular bootleg 5 Go Mad At The Roundhouse. The revised version of the song appeared on the band's self-titled debut album, but it wouldn't reach America until 1979, after the release of their second album Give 'Em Enough Rope.

During live performances, The Clash only used the song as a set staple for British audiences between 1976 to 1978. However when it came to American audiences the song became a mandatory opener, as the band used it to gauge the sense of humor of the audience. During their first American tour in 1979, the song was met with some distaste, however most American audiences were able to take the joke and agreed with the critical message of the song.

The Clash were formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk rockers, and their line up most famously consisted of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Nicky "Topper" Headon. They didn't catch much attention in the US until after the release of their third album London Calling.
