This humorous shirt features a caricature of former US President Richard Nixon, and the image was drawn by the Sid Brawer, a political cartoonist who was also responsible for illustrating The Watergate Papers, a portfolio of satirical content centered around the Watergate scandal. In fact, this particular cartoon from Brawer was featured in The Watergate Papers, and it includes the wry caption "don't bug me". This shirt is copyright 1973, a time when many Democrats and critics of Nixon took to adopting humorous slogans that played off the multiple definitions of the word bug.

Of course, these bugging jokes were in reference to the Watergate Scandal, which eventually led to an impeachment process and Nixon's resignation in 1974. The scandal involved operatives that were involved with Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign, who were caught breaking in and planting listening devices inside the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in DC. Subsequent attempts to cover-up Nixon and his administration's involvement led to an official impeachment inquiry, and the entire debacle left a permanent stain on Nixon's reputation.
