The song was written by Kui Lee, a former fire knife dancer that used to work as the doorman at the club Honey's in Kaneohe. Honey's was owned by Don Ho's mother, and he discovered Lee's songwriting talent while working as the club's featured singer. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBoth the phrase and the song really took off after Ho performed the number at Duke Kahanamoku's nightclub in Waikiki, and it became the club's signature phrase.
