This humorous vintage tee was made in the 80s during the Buckwheat craze. Buckwheat was one of the characters featured in the Our Gang or Little Rascals short films that were released in the 30s and 40s. He was portrayed by William Thomas Jr., who later grew up to be a film lab technician. Despite only appearing during the early part of the 20th century however, Buckwheat became a pop culture icon in the 80s.
This was largely thanks to Eddie Murphy and his Buckwheat impression, which became a popular recurring gag during Murphy's time on Saturday Night Live. In fact Murphy's interpretation of the character became so overwhelming popular that Murphy decided to kill him off, just so he could get some relief from the bit. Still the SNL sketches sparked a pop culture phenomenon, and Buckwheat's face began appearing on all kinds of novelty merchandise, and shirts just like this one became a staple of the era.
