This was the first US census in which a state, in this case California, recorded a population of over 20 million. It was also the first census in which all 50 states recorded populations of over 400,000. The only state to have a negative population change was New York, with nearly a 4% decrease. However, New York retained its position as second most populous state followed by Texas, Pennsylvania, and Illinois.
