Portrayed by the stunning Cassandra Peterson, Elvira was the host of Elvira's Movie Macabre, which aired locally on KHJ-TV from 1981 to 1986. The program was created to replace the station's old weekend horror show Fright Night, featuring Larry Vincent, and Peterson was discovered through an open casting call. Prior to that, she had performed as a showgirl and toured nightclubs with a musical and comedy act. She also became a member of the LA improv troupe the Groundlings, which is where she established the Valley girl character that Elvira was largely based on.
