Gibson wasn't expected to play at all thanks to severe injuries that he'd sustained during the National League Championship Series, and he'd actually been undergoing physical therapy in the Dodgers clubhouse before he was put up to bat during the bottom of the ninth inning. He managed to slam a backdoor slider into the right-field bleachers, and won the game for the Dodgers.
