This awesome vintage find is an officially licensed tee featuring the artwork of the legendary underground comix illustrator Robert Crumb. Also known by his signature R. Crumb, this infamous cartoonist was one of the pioneering forefathers of the underground comix movement from the 1960s. He is best known for creating the publication Zap Comix, and much of Crumb's imagery continues to be recognizable even decades later. This t-shirt features one of his most famous, reoccuring characters, Mr. Natural, who first appeared in the Philadelphia-based underground newspaper, Yarrowstalks.
This bearded cartoon guru appeared in other various underground newspapers, and then eventually was featured in Zap Comix alongside his follower, Flakey Foont. Mr. Natural is meant to resemble wise nomadic gurus like Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, but his mysticism is repeatedly undermined by his shallow devotion to luxury. Crumb once acknowledged that one of his major inspirations for Mr. Natural was a character called The Little Hitchhiker from Gene Ahern's screwball comic strip The Squirrel Cage. This shirt depicts Mr. Natural spouting off one of his many aphorisms, "Quest into the unknown".
Robert Crumb's artwork became incredibly influential and often synonymous with the countercultural movement of the 1960s. His comics were easily identified by their crass, low brow humor and distinct cross-hatched style. In the early 80s, Crumb established the magazine Weirdo, which is remembered as one of the most prominent alternative comics publications of the era.
