This super rare and unique vintage t-shirt promotes the Tougher Than Leather Tour from one of the most influential and iconic hip hop groups of all time, Run DMC. This specific shirt is from a deadstock collection belonging to one of Run DMC's bodyguards, who accompanied them on tour and collected a number of one-of-a-kind keepsake t-shirts along the way. The back of this shirt shows that it is from the Australia and New Zealand leg of the tour in 1988.

Run DMC consisted of Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell. The group was first formed in 1983 out of Queens, New York City and they quickly became titans among 1980s hip hop culture, right alongside other icons like the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and Public Enemy. They were integral pioneers that helped to establish the new school of hip hop, and they helped to usher in the golden age of the genre.

Tougher Than Leather was the group's fourth studio album and it was released in conjunction with a crime film of the same name, which starred the band and was directed by Def Jam Records co-founder Rick Rubin. Tougher Than Leather was the follow up to the group's breakthrough album, Raising Hell, which made history by becoming the first hip hop record to ever go Platinum and then later multi-Platinum. The album included three Billboard charting singles "Run's House", "Mary Mary", and "I'm Not Going Out Like That". It was also certified Platinum by the RIAA and it managed to peak at the number 9 spot on the Billboard 200.

Despite this commercial success, many fans considered Tougher Than Leather to be a let down. This could just have been the result of Raising Hell's overwhelming success, that its follow up was doomed to pale in comparison, as the album has gained more acclaim over time. Despite fan's mixed emotions about Tougher than Leather, it was released at the height of the group's popularity. They had just wrapped their Together Forever Tour alongside the Beastie Boys, their track "Walk This Way" was one of the biggest hip hop hits of all time, and they had earned their own brand of Adidas sneakers. Run DMC's legacy was not tainted by the album's mixed reviews and fans still eagerly flocked to see them perform on their world tour.
