This awesome vintage shirt is from a 1988 concert tour for one of the most prominent groups of the golden era of hip hop, Run DMC. The tee is a keepsake from the Australia and New Zealand leg of Run DMC's Tougher than Leather Tour, which helped to promote their fourth studio album of the same name. Run DMC, first emerged on the scene in 1983, and it consisted of Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell. The trio of New York City natives were integral to the development of the new school of hip hop, and they are remembered alongside other influential artists like Public Enemy and LL Cool J.
Tougher Than Leather was the follow up to Run DMC's breakthrough album Raising Hell, which solidified their status as 80s hip hop titans. Some fans felt that Tougher Than Leather failed to match Raising Hell's legendary status, but the album still was certified Platinum and it included several charting singles like "Mary Mary", "I'm Not Going Out Like That", and "Run's House". If anything, Tougher Than Leather's mixed response was likely just a testament to how incredible Raising Hell was, as many fans retroactively agreed that any follow up to the release was doomed to pale in comparison.
Interest in the group and their promotional tour was certainly not affected by the success of the album. Run DMC was at the top of their game around the mid to late 80s. They had just finished their Together Forever Tour alongside the Beasties Boys, their song "Walk This Way" was dominating the charts as one of the biggest hits in the history of hip hop, and they had just signed the deal for their own brand of Adidas sneakers. This shirt celebrates the group at the peak of their career.
Fits like a modern unisex adult large. This shirt is thin and slightly off white.
