This bright green t-shirt is from a production of the musical Sarafina! at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York. The musical was conceived by Mbongeni Ngema, who collaborated with trumpeter Hugh Masekela in order to the create the lively the score that utilized a blend of South Africa sound with American pop and jazz. The musical centered around the Soweto Riots that were led by school children in South Africa in the mid 70s, and the title character, Sarafina, was a schoolgirl activist involved in the drama and violence.
The musical first premiered in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1987 before the production moved to Broadway. The cast featured Leleti Khumalo in the title role and she was awarded an NAACP Image Award for her performance as well as a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. The production received several other Tony Award nominations including ones for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography.
