This amazing tee pays homage to the 1994 coming of age film, Crooklyn, directed by Spike Lee. The shirt was made by Lee's own apparel line Forty Acres and a Mule, which was actually an extension of the production company he created with his friend and frequent collaborator Monty Ross. Crooklyn was created with the help of Lee's siblings Joie and Cinque, and set during the summer of 1973 in Brooklyn. The movie explores what is was like to grow up as a young black girl during that era, and focuses on the intricacies of family life.
The initial concept was created by Joie Lee, and she later sold it to her brother to direct and film. The three Lee siblings then collaborated on the script, and drew from their own experiences surrounding the passing of their mother and the way it affected their family. Aside from the movie's title song, the soundtrack was composed entirely from songs of the 60s and 70s, and each track was selected by Spike Lee himself, as he chose to use songs from his childhood.
While it never became as widely celebrated as some of Lee's other films like She's Gotta Have It or Do the Right Thing, Crooklyn was praised highly by critics. It was lauded for its vibrant style and emotional story, and many appreciated its offbeat and honest portrayal of black girlhood in the 70s.
