This amazing tee was made in honor of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, a historic piece of American folk art dedicated to those who died of AIDS related causes. The project was started in the late 80s, a time when the social stigma surrounding AIDS prevented many of its victims from receiving proper funerals. The quilt was conceived and designed by activist Cleve Jones, as a way to still recognize and remember those lost to the disease. The project also played a significant role in bringing awareness to the impact of the AIDS pandemic, and it demonstrated the importance of prevention, education, and treatment.
This particular tee commemorates one of the exhibits of the quilt, which took place in October of 1992, and the shirt includes the message, "Show the world this can't go on." That year, the quilt was displayed on the National Mall in Washington D.C., and its 21,000 handmade panels were able to stretch all the way from the base of the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial.
