This prestigious private university is best known for their impressive college football program, which has earned eleven national championships over the years. The Fighting Irish moniker was first used around the turn of the century, before it was officially adopted by the school in 1927. At the time, university president Rev. Matthew J. Walsh felt the name did a good job exemplifying the tenacious spirit of the school's athletic teams.
