This groovy music festival tee commemorates the 1996 Reggae Sunsplash Music Festival. The fest was founded in the late 70s by a group of Jamaican entrepreneurs who called themselves Synergy Productions. They founded the festival to promote tourism on the island during the slow summer months. The first festival was a huge success and by 1979, they had headliners like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Third World. Eventually, Reggae Sunsplash became so popular that the festival expanded into an international tour.
Sunsplash continued into the 1980s but began to decline in the 1990s due to financial hardship and a takeover by the Jamaica Tourist Board. The Board had offered financial assistance for the festival in return for part ownership of Syngery Productions, but the offer was declined. Eventually, the Tourist Board formed their own company called Reggae Sunsplash International and took over the festival. Their version never reached the same success as the original, but the international tour continued to thrive for some time.
