The poem was adorned on the sleeve of the Doors' 1968 album, Waiting for the Sun, and fans quickly interpreted "the Lizard King" to be referring to Morrison. The singer happily embraced this title, and the band started performing the poem live at their shows. It was even featured on their 1970 live album, Absolutely Live.

While the Doors were only active for a short period of time, their legacy has endured for decades. They were one of the most commercially successful bands to emerge out of the 60s, and the first American group to release eight consecutive gold albums.
