The World's Day of Atonement marked the one year anniversary of the Million Man March that was held at the National Mall in Washington D.C. This massive demonstration was organized with the help of groups like the National African American Leadership Summit and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and it was designed to bring attention to a larger grassroots movement focused on bringing politicians' attention toward urban and minority issues that predominately affected the Black community.

The World's Day of Atonement was not only held to celebrate the Million Man March, but also to continue its message. The event was held at the United Nations Plaza in New York City, and it featured a keynote address given by the head of the Nation of Islam, Minister Louis Farrakhan. Other figures that spoke included Khalid Abdul Muhammad, Wauneta Lone Wolf, Al Sharpton, and Benjamin Chavis.
