Originally an Army Air Corps rest camp, the city wasn't officially incorporated until 1978. The World Championships, which began in 1964, helped to drive crowds of boating enthusiasts to the area, and for years the race was funded almost entirely by the local McCulloch Company, that was owned by the city's founder, Robert P. McCulloch.
