This sweet, brightly colored tank top features a graphic of hibiscus flowers, a mule and the words, "The Great Mule Ride Moloka'i." The Mule ride in question brings tourists along the steep Kalaupapa Trail to the settlement of Kalaupapa, a historical leper colony. Leprosy, or Hansen's disease as it is officially known, is a bacterial infection that affects the skin, nerves, and eyes. It once ravaged communities as it was highly contagious and not treatable.
The Kalaupapa community was designated as a leper colony, a place where those with the disease would be quarantined, in the 19th century. Father Damien, a canonized Catholic Saint, served the Kalaupapa community for over a decade before succumbing to the disease, and he is remembered as the patron saint of leprosy and all of Hawaii. Leprosy is now an easily treatable disease, thanks to antibiotics, but many former patients and their families chose to stay in Kalaupapa. It's now designated as a national historical park and visitors must have a sponsor in order to visit: either a resident of the settlement or a tour agency.
Fits like a modern unisex adult large. This shirt is deadstock, unworn.
