This red vintage t-shirt is emblazoned with the phrase "If Not Now When" across the front. This is the title of an Italian novel written by Primo Levi in 1982. Known in Italian as Se non ora qunado? the title for the book comes from a well known Jewish saying attributed to Hillel the Elder. The full quote reads "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" The book follows the exploits of several Jewish partisans and resistance fighters trying to sabotage the German war machine from behind Nazi lines during World War II. Levi himself was a Jewish Holocaust surviver who spent time in the Auschwitz concentration camp and wrote about his experiences during the war.
