This awesome double-sided sweatshirt is from 1988 and it's for the amazing new wave band Oingo Boingo. The band was first formed in 1979 by Danny Elfman, who is best known for his incredible soundtrack work on films like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Batman Returns, and Men in Black. The band originated as surrealist musical theatre troupe called the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo and they appeareared on both The Gong Show and in the cult film the Forbidden Zone directed by Richard Elfman. As the 80s began, the group moved away from their street theatre origins and transitioned into a full musical act with influences from ska, punk, pop, and rock music.
In the mid 80s, the band released their most commercially successful album Dead Man's Party. The album featured their highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100, "Weird Science", which had been written for the John Hughes comedy of the same name. They were subsequently featured on other soundtracks such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Teen Wolf Too, and Back to School, where the band also appeared in the film as a performing group. In 1988, they released the album Boingo Alive, a nontraditional live album that had them recording live in a studio with no audience. Songs featured on the album included "Dead Man's Party", "Just Another Day", "Wild Sex (In the Working Class)", "No One Lives Forever", "Violent Love", and "Only a Lad".
The cover art for Boingo Alive was created by illustrator Gary Panter, who also worked as an emmy-winning set designer for Pee-wee's Playhouse. The designs on this shirt are reminiscent of Panter's colorful otherworldly style and it's possible that he could be responsible for these images as well.
Fits like a modern unisex adult medium. There is a very faint mark at the center of the back, see pics.
