The tour, which was in support of her album of the same name, was a part of the comeback era for the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. Her previous album Private Dancer solidified her legacy as a solo artist separate from her ex-husband Ike Turner. Some hit singles from Break Every Rule included "Typical Male," "Two People," and "What You Get Is What You See" all of which reached the Billboard Top 30.

Turner's Break Every Rule World Tour was sponsored by Pepsi-Cola and broke several box office records around the globe. As of 2022, her Rio de Janeiro show still holds the record for largest audience at a paid concert by a female artist with over 180,000 attendees. This particular show was filmed and released on VHS and DVD as "Tina Live in Rio 88." The tour was originally billed as Tina's last tour, however, she went on to have several more tours that were billed the same.
