This epic tee appears to be from the eighties hip hop clothing brand Troop. This graffiti-inspired print indicates it might have been a limited time release or a collaboration they did with an artist. Features a great cotton blend, brilliant colors, and that old school NYC vibe.
Troop Sport aka World of Troop was founded in 1985 by brothers Teddy and Harvey Held along with William Kim. Their brand was popular with Black and Latino Americans, and in just three short years Troop earned an exclusive status in NYC streetwear and beyond. Some of the most famous names in rap and R&B were rocking TROOP including LL Cool J, Ultramagnetic MCs, MC Hammer, Flava Flav, Chuck D of Public Enemy, and Stetsasonic.
Shortly after gaining traction, rumors began circulating that Troop was owned by the KKK, suggesting white supremacists were making money off mad expensive clothes and shoes sold to inner city minorities. Sales dropped, they declared bankruptcy, and by the early nineties Troop completely vanished from the US market. The rumors were false, TROOP was run by two Jewish dudes and a Korean guy.
On the plus side, Troop was able to make a deal with a licensee in Europe throughout the 90s. As time passed, the brand reemerged in the USA with the revival of vintage and retro styles. Their NY streetwear vibe gained a cult following in the early 2000s and caught the attention of several people including rapper Nelly, who obtained their apparel license in 2000.
