Many people consider Willie Nelson to be one of the most influential country musicians of all time. He was a pivotal figure in the sub genre of outlaw country, which arose in the 1960s as a response to the growing conservative movement in the country music community. Nelson's career spans several decades, and during that time he's released dozens of beloved studio albums and also gained notoriety for his activism in marijuana legalization and environmental protection.
Willie Nelson's released two albums in 1983; Tougher Than Leather and Without a Song. The former was Nelson's first album of new, original songs since his 1975 album, Red Headed Stranger. Tougher Than Leather peaked on the US Billboard Top Country Albums at #4, and 1983 was also the year Nelson played in the US festival, founded and funded by Apple's Steve Wozniak. The festival was a two part event; the first leg ran during Labor Day weekend 1982 and the second on Memorial Day Weekend 1983. The latter was split into four, genre specific days and Nelson played on Country Music day along with Emmylou Harris, Alabama, and Waylon Jennings.
